Zonderwater Nov 4, 2007
The annual Italian commemoration of the Italian prisoners of War camp, founded at Zonderwater just outside Pretoria during the Second World War, was truly a wonderful day to remember.
As always emotions were evident as hundreds of Italian South Africans of all ages flocked to the cemetery and monuments of Zonderwater, to acknowledge and pay respects to the Italian prisoners of war who lived and died there and to the immense contributions they made to South Africa. Many young Italian South Africans, find our beginnings in South Africa based around Zonderwater and its history. As is tradition the ceremony included the representation of the various regions and association, followed by the Holy Catholic Mass, blessing of the cemetery and addresses by various dignitaries. This Year the community was particularly privileged to be honored by the presence of an Italian Senator and Deputy Minister of foreign affairs of Italy Franco Danieli. Senator Danieli interacted with the community in the humble gentle manner which has epitomized his visit to South Africa. The Day was rounded of in the best possible way, a delicious Italian panino and a glass of Lambrusco for everyone present. Many thanks to the Italian ambassador Alessandro Cevese, the Italian-consul general Enrico Di Agostini, the COM.IT.TES, Adriatic Ship Supply & Trading, Electric Camuna, Cremona and Sons, H2O, the Italian Club of Johannesburg, Johannesburg Italian Ladies Society and the Giovani Italo-Sud Africani (GIS) who worked together in organizing, preparing and serving the meal to the hundreds of community members present. It was a true pleasure seeing young and old celebrating and enjoying a day dear to the hearts of so many Italian South Africans.
We look forward to this becoming a tradition that will be upheld on an annual basis.
