CT business tourism set to boom in 2010

Business tourism in Cape Town is set to benefit from a major boom in 2010 with the city’s conference calendar already filling up.

The Cape Town International Convention Centre and Events Bureau has reported that 10 events have already been secured for 2010. These events will bring an estimated 16 000 business tourists to the Mother City. The Bureau reports that the economic impact of these visitors will be in the region of R166 million.

“The incredible rate at which we are securing conferences together with our tourism partners, is an indication of the world’s recognition of and growing interest in our region, country and continent as a business tourism destination,” says Calvyn Gilfellan, of Cape Town Routes Unlimited, the city’s destination marketing organisation. Cape Town is currently ranked the Number One convention destination in Africa securing more than half of the conference business coming into the continent.

Cape Town’s premier conference venue, the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), recently announced their record turnover of R100 million over the financial year ending June 30 2007. The centre contributed R2.4 billion to South Africa’s GDP and created over 9000 jobs.

The CTICC attributes their success to their busy year in which they hosted 509 events including 46 international conferences. The centre’s Managing Director Dirk Elzinga says “the number of international conference delegate days is the most important contributing factor to the economic spin-off of the CTICC.” Last year the CTICC hosted 45 576 international delegates, each of whom stayed in Cape Town for slightly more than five days on average

Gilfellan believes that 2010 is an ideal opportunity for South Africa to market itself as a world class business tourism destination. “Cape Town is seen as a rising star on the global conference scene. We must use [2010] to position our destination in such a way that those who will be visiting South Africa in 2010, return soon for more. We believe that having conferences and events run parallel to the soccer tournament will help us to achieve this.”
