Alleged police killers caught

JOHANNESBURG – Thirty police officers have lost their lives in Gauteng since the beginning of this year.

This was disclosed by Provincial Police Commissioner Perumal Naidoo last night. He was briefing the media on the arrests of two men allegedly responsible for at least one of the murders.

“They were running, we were chasing and they did not reach the finish line”, Naidoo said, contradicting earlierreports, and the general belief among fellow officers, that the men simply handed themselves over at a police station east of Pretoria.

No shots were fired during the chase. The two awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from the Randburg police holding cells earlier this week after allegedly murdering a police officer.

Krishan “Scully” Naidoo, 27, and Aboobiker Jawad Aboobiker, 22, escaped on Monday night after allegedly overpowering Inspector Thandokuhle Ngubane, 40, while he was doing a routine cell inspection.

Ngubane was found dead when officers went to check up on him.

He had been tied up with pieces of blanket and had a shredded piece of blanket thrust into his mouth.

Naidoo thanked the task team of more than 50 officers for delivering on his ultimatum, made on Wednesday, that the suspects had to be behind bars within 24 hours. Four people who were believed to have helped the escapees were also arrested.
