La mostra di Paolo Bini alla Provenance House inaugura The Artist Residence Project fra il Centro Luigi Di Sarro di Roma e la Smac Art Gallery di Cape Town

L'apertura della mostra del giovane pittore italiano Paolo Bini, originario di Battipaglia, è stata la seconda tappa della Settimana della Lingua e della Cultura Italiana a Città del Capo. L'evento è stato ospitato dalla Provenance House e dalla Sade Art Gallery in Gardens ed è stato posto sotto il patrocinio del console d'Italia a Città del Capo Edoardo Vitali, la cui collaborazione è stata essenziale nel reperimento della sede adatta per l'esposizione. La realizzazione del progetto risale invece alla collaborazione fra il Centro Sperimentale d'Arte Moderna Luigi Di Sarro di Roma e la Smac Art Gallery di Cape Town e Stellenbosch, rispettivamente rappresentati da Alessandra Atti Di Sarro, nipote di Luigi Di Sarro, e Baylon Sandri. La nostra presenza all'inaugurazione della mostra, martedì sera, è stata purtroppo compromessa dal più grande ingorgo stradale che si sia mai visto a Città del Capo, causato da un incidente sull'autostrada N1 in uscita dal centro cittadino durante l'ora di punta dell'esodo dei pendolari. Questo imprevisto ha allungato a quasi due ore il tempo di percorrenza dei pochi chilometri da Green Point al Parlamento, che normalmente non richiede più di cinque minuti. Siamo quindi arrivati quando gli altri stavano per andarsene. Abbiamo comunque rimediato il testo dell'intervento di Baylon Sandri, nel quale sono illustrate le essenzialità della mostra e del progetto che impegna la sua galleria e il Centro Di Sarro. Siamo invece debitori verso Claudio Farinelli per le foto che accompagnano questo resoconto. Qui di seguito il discorso di Sandri:

SMAC is very proud to be involved with the Centro Luigi di Sarro in Rome and to be part of this exchange programme. The Artist Residence Project – it now has an official name – is the brainchild of our gallery and Alessandra Atti di Sarro, with the support of Edoardo Vitali the Italian consul. Residencies and exchange are an integral part of the international art world and Cape Town - which probably has the most vibrant art scene on the continent – provides surprisingly few opportunities for this type of exchange. This programme means that a South African artist is soon going to be doing a residency in Italy with a chance to spend time on the Amalfi coast – so Alessandra – I have actually decided that I am going to change profession and become an artist – it’s the easy life – artists seem to be sunchasers – on that note - it is Ed Young’s birthday today and he is freezing his toes off on a residency in Zurich – he clearly did not get the sunchasing memo.

The opposite applies to Paolo Bini who did receive the sunchaser memo – he is suspiciously warm and way too friendly and sincere for our liking. I suppose Italians are just different. Paolo Bini hails from a very beautiful part of the world – Battipaglia in Salerno. He is still a young artist who has developed a good reputation, a very unique style of abstract painting which takes on a variety of forms – but is instantly recognisable.

Andrew Lamprecht and I were discussing contemporary abstraction this afternoon and he directed me to an article in Artnews which claims that the golden age of abstraction was not in the 1910s, 1930s, 1950s but right now in the 2010s and the author proposes different reasons for this new wave of abstraction – and as Andrew pointed out, it is very interesting that, landscape and the environment is one of the main underlying concepts – for many young abstract artists and painters today.

This exhibition represents an interpretation of the Cape landscape as viewed and encountered by the artist during his residency. He is interested in or should I say obsessed with – the line- which he uses to construct these landscapes. I don’t necessarily see the landscape in them – I read them differently – for example I don’t recognize these fluorescent flashes in any of the clouds over Stellenbosch (which happens to be one of the titles to a very beautiful work) – I mentioned that the paintings look digital abstractions to me and Paolo indicated that that makes complete sense because his generation or the digital generation has this framework or reference to draw on – for him they are, however, specific experiences of the land - In the one work, for example, he pointed out Lion’s Head as a representational figurative element – well I would never have thinked it – but there it is.

Regardless of how we read these works, they are intriguing, complex and very different – we have really enjoyed hosting the artist and appreciate the energy and enthusiasm with which he has embraced this visit to Cape Town and the profound effect which this experience appears to have made on his work – so on all fronts it's mission accomplished and we look forward to round 2.

Levi”, Eboli (Sa); nel 2007 si laurea in Scenografia, presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti, Napoli; nel 2007 è assistente scenografo, presso Cinespettacolo della Grancia, Brindisi di Montagna (Pz); nel 2009 è docente esterno,esperto in “scenografia/arti visive”, del progetto PON F – Azione F1-FSE-2008-936 presso l'Istituto Comprensivo Statale “G.Salvemini”, Battipaglia (Sa).
